Freight Trains still run through SoMa. We're not just limited to those wimpy CalTrains that leave the 4th and Townsend station, go beneath the 280 for a bit, through a tunnel under Potrero Hill and out into Bayshore. No, there are trains that run down the middle of the street.

The trains cross third street at 16th near Mission Bay. It usually happens around 11am on Tuesdays. Not real impressive, maybe a box car or two and a flat car. But it's a train, goddammit!

Behind the cement plant, there is an old rail yard. The trains back into the yard, do a switch over, and then procede down Illinois Street from 16th to the end a bit past Army.

More information of trains along the San Francisco waterfront can be found onthe Golden Gate Railroad Museum site.
